The Goods and Services Tax Council has approved the imposition of 28 percent tax on online gaming. West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said the Council has approved exemption from GST on import of food and beverages for special medical purposes used in the treatment of cancer and rare diseases.

The GST Council decided that online gaming, casino and horse riding will be taxed at 28 percent. The Minister said that the GST law will be amended to ensure that these three are not actionable claims like lottery and betting. Maharashtra Forestry and Fisheries Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar said that the council has decided to close the gap between skill and chance in online gaming. A tax of 28 percent of the total face value will have to be paid on them.

The 50th meeting of the GST Council was held today under the leadership of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Even before the start of the meeting, there were speculations that stricter rules like tax on online gaming may be considered in this meeting of the GST Council.

A tax exemption was also sought on the cancer drug Dinutukimab. The fitment committee said that the medicine which costs 26 lakhs and for which money is collected from crowd funding, should be excluded from the scope of GST. The Group of Ministers agreed on this. 12 percent GST is still levied on this medicine.
