2 days of national mourning announced in the country on the death of former CM Badal

Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal passed away at the age of 95 on Tuesday. He was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali on April 16 after complaining of shortness of breath, where he breathed his last at 7.42 pm on April 25.

Badal was the oldest leader of the country’s politics. On his demise, the central government has announced two days of national mourning, in which the flag will be flown at half-mast across the country. Also, all official entertainment programs have been cancelled.

Today on April 26, his dead body will be kept at the Shiromani Akali Dal office in Sector 28 of Chandigarh at 10 am for public viewing. After this, his final journey will begin at around 12 noon. This journey will reach Badal village via Rajpura, Patiala, Sangrur, Barnala, Rampura Phool, Bathinda. Tomorrow i.e. Thursday at 1 pm, his last rites will be performed in his native village Badal.

Parkash Singh Badal held the post of Chief Minister of Punjab for five times. He has been the youngest and oldest Chief Minister of Punjab. He was first sworn in as Chief Minister in 1970 at the age of 43, making him the youngest Chief Minister of Punjab. In 2012, at the age of 84, Badal was sworn in as the oldest Chief Minister. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second highest civilian honor, in 2015.

Badal, who was at the center of the state’s Sikh-centric politics, also had influence in religious Sikh organizations – SGPC and DSGPC. He started his political life in 1947. He was Sarpanch of his village Badal and then Chairman of Block Samiti Lambi. He was first elected to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha in 1957 on the ticket of the political party Shiromani Akali Dal.

After this he was also elected MLA in 1969 and became Minister of Community Development, Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries in the state government. His party had to sit in the opposition in 1972, 1980 and 2002 and then Badal also succeeded as a strong leader of the opposition in the Vidhan Sabha. In the Punjab Assembly elections of 2022, he also contested from Lambi Assembly constituency. He had to lose his seat in the Aam Aadmi Party movement. As soon as he contested the election, the record of the oldest candidate in the country was added to his name.
