WhatsApp banned 29 lakh Indian accounts in the month of January. The microblogging platform said this in its User Safety Monthly Report released today. According to the Information Technology Rules, 2021, the Monthly Report of India is released on the 1st of every month. The social media giant said it took action on accounts through its prevention and detection methods for violating India’s laws or WhatsApp’s terms of service.

WhatsApp has said that over 29 lakh accounts have been banned in India in January. This figure is much lower than the 36.77 lakh accounts closed in December last year. The company has taken this step in compliance with the IT Act 2021.

WhatsApp said it uses tools and resources to prevent harmful behavior on its platform. The company said it is particularly focused on prevention as it believes in preventing harmful activity from happening in the first place.

WhatsApp has 500 million users in the country. A Meta spokesperson said it received 1,461 complaints against fake accounts in January. A company spokesperson said that we have taken preventive action on our own to protect this platform from any kind of ill-purpose and abuse.
