August Weather Forecast: After heavy rains in July, the country is likely to receive normal rainfall during the second half of the monsoon season (August and September), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The department said that east central India, parts of eastern and northeastern region and most of the Himalayan sub-divisions are likely to receive slightly above normal rainfall. IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra told a press conference here that most parts of peninsular India and western parts of northwest and central India are likely to receive below normal rainfall.

India recorded 13 per cent more rainfall in July, the third lowest rainfall since 1901 in the eastern and northeastern regions of the country, he said.

Mohapatra said northwest India recorded the highest rainfall since 2001 (258.6 mm) in July. The IMD chief said India has seen fluctuations in monsoon rainfall, with a nine per cent shortfall in June, while a 13 per cent excess in July.

The country has so far recorded 467 mm rainfall over the normal rainfall (445.8 mm) in the monsoon season, which is more than five percent. Mohapatra said that El Nino has not had any effect on the monsoon rainfall so far. El Nino is generally associated with weakening monsoon winds and dry weather in India.
