Moldova and the International Organization for Migration, UNHCR have made it possible for Ukrainian refugees who want to seek temporary protection in European Union countries to fly there free of charge.
This will be possible within the framework of the “EU+ Air Transfers” program, which is coordinated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the government of Moldova, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“IOM, UNHCR and the Government of Moldova coordinate efforts to make the flights possible. Refugees who have family members in the EU countries, or vulnerable persons fleeing Ukraine who have specific needs, can participate in the program,” UHNCR’s statement reads.
Within this program, Ukrainians will be able to travel to countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland.
According to VisitUkraine.Today, an Ukrainian information portal for help, the flights will be organized according to the request, which means that the participants must apply for participation in advance.
The program was created for refugees seeking temporary protection in European countries who belong to a certain category, for example, people who have relatives in EU countries and need help for reunification, refugees with disabilities or special needs. At the same time, the program also includes single parents with three or more children, pregnant women and the elderly.
In order for Ukrainian women to get a free ticket, they must have a passport, an internal passport, a document for granting asylum in Moldova or a document of permanent residence in Ukraine.
As VisitUkraine.Today explains, people who need medical assistance or wheelchairs will be provided with the necessary support.
At the end of last month, the Hungarian capital Budapest also decided to extend the use of free public transport for Ukrainian refugees until the end of March of this year.
Free transport for refugees from Ukraine was introduced in Budapest for the first time on March 4, 2022 and has now been extended for a year.
On the other hand, at the end of December last year, Slovakia announced that Ukrainian citizens will no longer be able to travel for free to the country’s capital, Bratislava.
Refugees from Ukraine were previously entitled to free travel through Bratislava, but starting from January 1, of this year, free travel on public transport in Bratislava became unavailable to them.
