New and better rail connections will become a reality for Italy and Germany two years from now following a new pilot project introduced by the Italian state-owned rail company Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS Group) as well as Germany’s Deutsche Bahn.

The new project is set to become effective in 2026, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to local media reports, the recent agreement will connect Rome and Munich while daily services will be operated by Trenitalia’s high-speed Frecciarossa 1000 train.

The new road departing from Italy’s capital will include other cities such as  Florence, Verona, Rovereto, Bologna, Trento, Bolzano, Brennero,  Innsbruck and Munich, according to BTN Europe report. At the same time, the route from Milan will stop at the following destinations before reaching Munich: Brescia, Verona, Bolzano, Brennero as well as Innsbruck.

Confirming that rail links to the German city of Munich will officially take effect in 2026, Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane stressed that there is a possibility to extend the roads up to Berlin.

The recent project is among ten projects supported by the European Commission in order to improve cross-border rail links throughout European countries.

“While the demand for green mobility is growing, we need the rail market to respond better and faster, especially for long and cross-border journeys,” the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, pointed out in this regard.

She stressed that this is the reason why the European Commission wants to help the railway companies by making new international rail connections.

In January this year, the European Commission announced that it decided to support a total of ten pilot projects to establish new rail services and improve the existing ones.

Such announcement was confirmed through a statement provided by the Commission, while stressing that the new rails and improved ones will better connect European countries making travel by train between the block more affordable and frequent.

Vălean stressed that the EU rail market must be improved to respond to the increasing demand for green travel in a better and faster way.

“This is why the European Commission now wants to help rail companies create new international train connections – by day and by night – by breaking down the many barriers to cross-border rail. I’m looking forward to working with the rail sector to make these 10 pilots a success and to inspire many more to join!” the Commissioner noted.

Earlier this month, the Commission said that the DiscoverEU spring call that will operate from March 15 until March 29 will permit thousands of people to visit European territories by train.
