The Punjab government has called a meeting on November 22 to hold talks with the striking employees and farmers. This meeting will be held by the Cabinet Sub-Committee under the leadership of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. The farmers had announced on November 11 that they would again march towards Chandigarh on November 26 with their pending demands. Bharati Kisan Union (Lakhowal) along with 32 organizations had announced to reach Chandigarh with 300 tractor-trolleys.

Harinder Singh Lakhowal, state president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) and patron Avtar Singh Mehlon announced the march to Chandigarh after a meeting in Ludhiana. Within 48 hours of this announcement, the government is ready to talk to the farmers.

All unions called for a day

The cabinet sub-committee has called all the unions on the same day but the meeting time has been kept separate for all. This meeting will be held at Punjab Bhavan Chandigarh. This decision has been taken by the state government after a meeting with the coordination committee.

First, the Cabinet Sub-Committee will hold a meeting with the CPF Employees Union Punjab at 11 am. After this, Democratic Forest Employees Union Punjab will have a meeting at 11:30 am. After this only 15 minutes time will be given to Office Employees Union Punjab at 12 noon. The meeting of Computer Teachers Union Punjab will be held at 12.15 pm. After this, the next meeting will be held with farmers’ organizations. The time of which is fixed at 12:30 in the afternoon. There will be a cabinet sub-committee meeting with the Bharatiya Kisan Union.

Demands of unions

  • Office Employees Union Punjab demanded that superintendents should be promoted, senior assistants should be promoted, new recruits should be made in the DC office as per rules, office employees should be exempted from toll plazas.
  • Democratic Forestry Employees Union Punjab demands that raw, contract and daily wage laborers of Punjab should be fixed. According to the decision of the 15th International Labor Conference, instead of 26 days per month, 30 days should be counted in the seniority list. Retirement age should be increased to 60 years.
  • CPF Employees Union Punjab demands that the old pension scheme be restored. Gratuity, ex-gratia amount, family pension, medical allowance, medical claim facility should be provided. Those who have completed 40 years of service should be entitled to pension.
  • The main demands of Computer Teachers Union Punjab are related to salaries, pension and transfer. These should be resolved on a priority basis.
  • Bharatiya Kisan Union Dallewal is demanding that farmers should be given minimum support price for all crops. Damaged paddy crop should be compensated. The government should manage the straw.
