After the lockdown, the continued underperformance of low-budget films at the box office has become a source of stress for Bollywood. But while last year’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ challenged this trend in a bang, now ‘The Kerala Story’ is taking the film business by surprise.
No one expected a big bang from ‘The Kerala Story’, which was released in theaters on May 5. The film got a lot of limelight due to controversies but still no one thought that it is going to earn at a record breaking speed. But ‘The Kerala Story’ is earning at a whirlwind pace beating all expectations and expectations. Adah Sharma’s film has become the highest earner of the day at the box office.
‘The Kerala Story’ had its 10th day in theaters on Sunday. While the big films have started earning half of the second week compared to the first week, the second Sunday has been the highest grossing day for the film.
From the start of the second weekend, ‘The Kerala Story’ picked up a good pace and collected Rs 12.35 crore on Friday, which was much higher than the first Friday. On Saturday, the film jumped over 55% and collected Rs 19.5 crore. Box office reports estimate that the film has collected Rs 23.75 crore at the box office on Sunday. That is, the collection of the film in the second weekend is more than 55 crore rupees. The first weekend of ‘The Kerala Story’ earned Rs 35.43 crore. Along with this, the total collection of the film has crossed 136 crores.
Record breaking Sunday
After the lockdown, Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Pathan’ topped the highest grossing films for the second Sunday. This spy thriller collected Rs 27.5 crore on its second Sunday. At number two is ‘The Kashmir Files’ which surprised everyone by earning 26.2 crores on the second Sunday.
Third in the list was Yash starrer KGF 2, which earned Rs 22.68 crore on its second Sunday. Now, by earning 23.75 crores, ‘The Kerala Story’ has made the third biggest second Sunday collection. While KGF 2 and ‘Pathan’ had big budgets and the superstar factor, ‘The Kerala Story’ is a small budget film without a famous starcast. So leaving Adah Sharma’s KGF 2 behind is really a big deal.
‘The Kerala Story’ has collected 136.74 crore rupees in 10 days. Now to cross the mark of 150 crores, the film has to earn just over 13 crores on Monday. Even if it doesn’t happen, the film will comfortably reach 150 crores on Tuesday. Now ‘The Kerala Story’ is ready to earn 200 crores. People’s eyes will be on how far the total earnings of the film reaches.
