Chandigarh: A central inter-ministerial team of the Government of India will begin a three-day visit to the flood-affected districts of Punjab from today. This team will visit Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Rupnagar and Jalandhar districts. The seven-member central team includes top officials from the Union Home Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, National Disaster Management Authority, Panchayat and Development Ministry, Central Water Commission, Finance Department, besides the Ministry of Roads.

According to available information, the central team under the leadership of Ravinesh Kumar, Financial Advisor of the National Disaster Management Authority, will start its tour on Tuesday from the villages of Mohali, Patiala and Sangrur in the district adjacent to Ghaggar. On Wednesday, the central team will visit the villages of Sutlej-affected districts Ropar and Jalandhar where Sutlej has caused heavy destruction. On the third day, the central team will be in Chandigarh where the state government will present its case to the centre.

It should be said that floods caused huge destruction in Punjab during July. According to the government report, there has been a financial loss of about 1500 crore rupees in the state. Hundreds of villages have not yet recovered from the blows of Ghaggar and Sutlej. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has instructed to complete the work of Special Girdavari by August 15 and has also announced to give adequate compensation to the affected people.

The Punjab government has now written to the Center seeking permission to use disaster relief funds to compensate farmers. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has also written a letter in this regard to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Chief Secretary Anurag Verma has also sent a letter to the Center in this regard. The Punjab government now hopes that the central team will approve the payment of compensation to the flood victims during their visit to the state
