Spain Has Granted Temporary Protection to Over 168,000 Ukrainian Refugees In a Year Since War Started

The Spanish government has revealed that the country has exceeded 168,000 temporary protections for Ukrainian refugees this year.

Through a statement issued yesterday, February 22, the government emphasised that since February 21, the Office of Asylum and Refugees (ZAP) has processed and granted 168,131 protections for refugees from Ukraine, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Data provided by the government also shows that 63 per cent, or 105,998 of Ukrainian refugees who have received temporary protection, are women, and 37 per cent, or 62,133, are men.

Meanwhile, according to age group, 33 per cent are under 18 years old; 25.5 per cent, are between 19 and 35 years old; 34.5 per cent, are between 36 and 64; and 7 per cent are over 65 years old.

โ€œIn addition, most of the people who have obtained temporary protection, 98.2 per cent, are citizens of Ukrainian nationality, while the remaining 1.8 per cent correspond to citizens of other nationalities who were legally residing on Ukrainian territory when war broke out,โ€ the statement reads.

Temporary protections that are given mainly in autonomous communities are as follows:

  • Community of Valencia (45,379)
  • Catalonia (38,616)
  • Andalusia (24,002)
  • Madrid (23,646)

The government also added that these data place Spain among the European countries that have provided the most temporary protection to citizens and residents of Ukraine.

By December last year, Spanish authorities granted 160,000 temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees.

At the time, the government data revealed that women made up 63.47 per cent of the people who received temporary protection in Spain, or a total of 102,034, while men made up 36.53 per cent, or more precisely, a total of 58,722.

Regarding their age, 33.69 per cent are minors, 25.33 per cent are between 19 and 35 years old, 34.17 per cent are between 36 and 64 years old, and 6.8 per cent are older than 65.

Over the year, Ukrainian refugees had the right to apply for protection in authorized reception centers. After the approval of the application, the refugees receive the residence permit. At the same time, those who were of working age also received their work permit.

Besides, Ukrainian citizens with temporary protection in Spain can use their driverโ€™s license for at least one year to drive on Spanish territory.

Among the EU countries that have accepted the most significant number of Ukrainian refugees is Germany, with over a million of them. Meanwhile, the number of Ukrainian refugees who have received temporary protection in the EU is almost five billion.
