According to Central Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh, the center is now issuing an advisory after receiving many complaints. He pointed out that any seller insisting on a customer’s mobile number falls under “unfair trade practice”.

Customers have complained that many retailers are not providing them with service if they refuse to give their mobile number. Here “Vendors say that unless mobile number is given, they cannot generate bill. This is an unfair and prohibited trade practice under the Consumer Protection Act. There is no rationale behind collecting this information. Unless customers have consent, they should not take the number.

No need to give mobile number

Customers in India are not required to provide their mobile number to make purchases. But most of the time they have to give mobile number. According to officials, this is also a privacy concern and the customer has the right to share his mobile number or not. He said there are complaints from salesmen that they inform customers that they cannot bill without the contact number as it is inbuilt in the system.

Can’t ask for numbers by force

According to the officials, they will give clear guidelines to the sellers that if a customer does not want to give his mobile number for the bill after purchasing the goods, the salesperson should not insist on it. A consultancy will be sent to the retail industry and organizations like CII, FICCI and Assocham to resolve the issue in the interest of consumers.

In another step, the ministry has sent its views on introducing a universal charging port – USB Type-C – for smartphones, laptops and tablets to the Ministry of Electronics and IT, suggesting that these chargers be introduced from June 2025. can be rolled out. done In fact, the ministry is emphasizing the use of common chargers for only two types of electronic charging devices to minimize e-waste.
