Reserve of Lithium used in mobile and EV batteries found for the first time in the country

Lithium, which is considered rare worldwide, has been found in the country for the first time. The Central Government informed that it has been found in Jammu and Kashmir. Lithium is used in electric vehicle (EV) batteries. It is a non-ferrous metal and its demand is increasing continuously.

Mines Secretary Vivek Bharadwaj said, “For the first time in the country, lithium reserves have been found in Jammu and Kashmir.” Lithium reserves have been found in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir in the exploration done by the Geological Survey of India (GSI). Mines Many minerals like lithium, nickel and cobalt are imported into India. Recently, the Mines Ministry had said that measures are being taken by the government to strengthen the supply chain of important minerals for emerging technologies. Some minerals including lithium are being imported from Australia and Argentina.

In the 62nd Central Geological Programming Board meeting, Bharadwaj said that whether it is mobile phones or solar panels, the need for important minerals is increasing. He said that to become self-sufficient, the country needs to find and process these minerals.

Tata Group, which does business from salt to automobiles, has established its presence in India and Europe. EV It is planned to set up battery cell plants for Tata Group automobile company Tata Motors PB Balaji, Chief Financial Officer, recently said that localizing cell manufacturing for EV batteries is important in increasing the share of local components in electric cars. This will help the company in creating a local supply chain. He informed that Tata Motors is considering setting up plants in Europe for battery cell manufacturing apart from India. With this, the battery cell needs of Jaguar Land Rover, the premium car unit of the company having a factory in Europe, will also be met. Tata Sons, the parent company of Tata Motors, will invest in battery cell manufacturing. However, he did not disclose the investment amount or its tenure. EV batteries are imported into the country and due to this the cost of these vehicles is high.
