Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi reached Manipur today for his two-day visit. Meanwhile, Manipur police stopped Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy going to Churachandpur at Bishnupur fearing violence. He was going to visit the people displaced due to caste violence in the relief camps in the state. Rahul also has to hold talks with civic organizations. According to the information received, this is the first visit of the Congress leader to the northeastern state after the violence broke out in Manipur on May 3.

Congress leader KC Venugopal was quoted as saying that the police was not allowing Rahul Gandhi’s car to proceed, while people standing on the sidelines were waving at him. “We don’t understand why they stopped us,” he said.

The Manipur Congress president told news agency PTI that Rahul Gandhi will meet civil society representatives, intellectuals and others during the two-day visit.

50,000 people are still forced to live in more than 300 relief camps in Manipur because of the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur that started in May. More than 100 people have lost their lives so far in this violence.

Earlier Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also visited Manipur. After this, he also called an all-party meeting regarding the situation in Manipur.
