The IGP said that this is the first time that 65 drug addicts, who were caught with small quantities of drugs, have taken advantage of Section 64-A of the NDPS by pledging to undergo treatment for rehabilitation.
Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill, who was addressing the 'Year Ender' press conference, said that from January 1 to December 26, 2023, Punjab Police registered 10,786 FIRs, including 1,385 commercial cases, and arrested 2,424 big fish. Including 14951 drug smugglers/suppliers have been arrested.

He said that the police teams have recovered 795 kg of opium, 403 quintals of poppy and 83.17 lakh tablets/capsules/injections/vials of pharma opioids from across the state, besides recovering a huge consignment of 1161 kg heroin. He further said that drug money worth Rs 13.67 crore has also been recovered from the arrested drug smugglers this year.

The IGP said that 294 properties worth Rs 127 crore (immovable properties worth Rs 110.64 crore and movable properties worth Rs 16.45 crore) have been seized by the Punjab Police this year, while another 90 properties worth Rs 26 crore have been seized. Proposals are pending with the competent authority.
He said that 673 POs/fugitives have been arrested by the Punjab Police since January 1, 2023, under a special drive to nab fugitive criminals in NDPS cases.
