The Punjab Education Department mistakenly transferred pre-matric scholarship money two to three times in the bank accounts of around 23,700 students in the last financial year. After which now difficulties have arisen for the teachers. The education department has ordered the teachers to check the passbooks of all students and deposit the excess money back into the government account.
According to a letter issued by the Assistant Director (Scholarships), there was a technical glitch in the Government of India’s Public Finance Management System (PFMS) portal, due to which money was mistakenly transferred twice to the accounts of 23,001 students. On the other hand, three times the amount was deposited in the accounts of about 694 students by mistake.
Each beneficiary was to be given Rs 3,500, which included Rs 1,400 as the state government’s share and Rs 2,100 as the Centre’s share. The state had to pay an additional amount of Rs 3.41 crore from its share. The school heads have been asked to check the double and triple entries of Rs 1400 in the passbooks.
Ordered to return money by October 20
The order further states that the District Education Officer (DEO) will have to ensure that the principals of all schools collect the extra amount from the students and deposit it back by October 20. Teachers should also check the bank passbook of each beneficiary and ensure recovery if so. Represents double or triple entry of scholarship amount.
The beneficiaries were mostly 10th class students, and most of them changed schools after clearing the board exams and some even moved out of the state.
Money transferred at the end of 2022-23
Education Secretary Kamal Kishore Yadav said the money came at the end of the financial year (2022-23) and the error occurred due to a technical glitch in the PFMS portal in March-April. When the mistake was realized, a list of those students was immediately prepared. who were given double or triple amount. We have now reworked the portal to ensure this never happens in the future.
