The Pakistan National Health Institute has confirmed the detection of wild polio virus type-1 in the sewage sample collected from 18 districts of the country. These samples were deposited from different sewage lines of all 4 states of Pakistan.
The affected areas include 12 districts of Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, one district of Balochistan and Islamabad. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated.
So far this year, 6 cases of polio have been reported in Pakistan, including 4 from Sindh, one each of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. In 2024, 74 cases were registered in the country.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared India to be polio free on 27 March 2014. However, last year, a case of polio was found in Meghail after 10 years.
