Second Hand Car: Owners of vehicles that have been sold more than once in Noida and Greater Noida need to update their registration documents, failing which the vehicles may be impounded. Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh has given this information. Lakshmi Singh told PTI that the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner will check people’s vehicles in a campaign. Recently, it is probing a hit-and-run case in Greater Noida, in which three B.Tech students were hit by a speeding car. One of the students, Sweety Kumar, was seriously injured and had to undergo brain surgery. It took more time for the police to trace the car and arrest the driver.

What was the matter?

The police commissioner has said that this was a case in which almost no leads were being found. Based on whatever information we had about a white Santro and its registration number ‘UP 16’ (Gautam Buddh Nagar), we started the investigation. The transport department told us that there were 12,000 Santro cars registered here. A further shortlisting of vehicles brought down to around 1,000 and finally, the number of suspected cars was reduced to only four, including one of the culprit, who was later arrested.

Laxmi Singh further said that during the investigation, the police found several vehicles that were sold and bought more than once and what was worrying the investigators was that many of them did not have updated registration details. The Commissioner of Police said that there have been cases of old vehicles which do not belong to their rightful owners being used for criminal activities.

Police teams in all three zones – Noida, Central Noida and Greater Noida – will soon start checking such old vehicles and will impound them if their registration documents are not updated. According to official estimates, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Transport Department receives around 6,000 applications every year for changes in registration details of private vehicles.
