Poland Makes Automatic Border Control Gates Available for Children

Children over the age of 12 are now eligible to use automatic border control gates for check-in at six border crossings in Poland, upon arrival in the country.

As announced by the Polish Border Guard, starting from today, children who have biometric travel documents, are at least 140 cm tall and over the age of 12, will be allowed to use the ABC gates upon arrival, which is estimated to help significantly reduce the check-in time.

However, not all children will be able to do so, as the facilitation will not be available to third-country citizens, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

โ€œOnly citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Community and Switzerland, using biometric travel documents, can check in at the ABC gates,โ€ the Polish Border Guard notes in its statement.

To date, there are 72 gates at air border crossings in Poland located at the six air border crossings listed below:

  1. Gdansk-Rebiechowo
  2. Krakow-Balice
  3. Poznan-Lawica
  4. Warsaw-Modlin
  5. Warsaw-Okecie
  6. Wroclaw-Strachowice

โ€œFrom June 2019 to the end of 2022, 4.7 million travelers used ABC gates,โ€ the statement also points out.

According to the Border Guards of Poland the automatic border control gates are very easy and quick to use, that is why they have decided to make the ABCs available for children too.

โ€œThe procedure takes a dozen or so seconds, which, when accumulating flights, allows to significantly shorten both the waiting time for the control and the control itself,โ€ the Border Guard further notes.

The procedures for check-in through these gates include scanning of the biometric passport, taking of a facial image and fingerprints, which are automatically checked and confirmed whether the passport belongs to the persons doing the check-in.

Such verification excludes the possibility of using a counterfeit, forged or someone elseโ€™s document.

At the same time, since the ABC gates are connected to the databases operated by the Border Guard, they can detect whether the person doing the check-in is listed as wanted or as a person that poses a threat to internal security and public order.

Once the passenger is positively verified, the exit door opens and he/she can leave the gate.

The majority of EU countries use ABC gates at their largest airports, in a bid to shorten check-in procedures and time.

In Estonia, Tallinn Airport and Narva Road Border Crossing started using the Automated Border Control system (ABC gates) two years agoin February 2021, in a bid to better tackle the increasing number of passengers reaching Estonia.
