Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) will develop technology to upcycle paddy waste and make supercapacitors. The institute says that this technology can make a significant contribution to burning stubble and other agricultural waste in the right way in North India.

This technology will give farmers an additional source of income, as paddy waste can be used to produce energy devices that can be used by industry.

The institute says that due to this technology, North India can make a significant contribution in reducing the burning of stubble and other agricultural waste. Researchers are promoting a new ‘farm-energy synergy’ through their work with organic waste, particularly kitchen waste, to develop usable activated carbon, a key ingredient in making supercapacitors.

Supercapacitors made from activated carbon produced from paddy waste are reported to be beneficial to consumers in the electronics, energy and agriculture sectors and can help develop self-sufficiency in the supercapacitor sector.

Self-reliance related to supercapacitors and supercapacitor-based energy storage technology will enhance IP production and employment within the country, said a release from the institute.
