Maha Shivratri 2023: Sri Sri 1008 Budha Baba Maheshwarnath Shiv Temple situated on the banks of Bansloi river in Maheshpur block headquarters, located 72 km north-west from Dumka, the sub-capital of Jharkhand state and 28 km south-east from district headquarter Pakur, is the center of faith and reverence among tribals and non-tribals. The main reason for the faith of people from far and wide towards this Shiva temple is the self-manifested Shivling. Devotees believe that the wishes asked here with a true heart definitely get fulfilled.

According to legend, this Shivling was seen for the first time by an ordinary cowherd named Maheshwar while grazing cattle. On this Shivling of about two feet height and about one and a half feet round, on the day of Mahashivaratri and on the occasion of the holy month of Shravan, the devotees of Lord Shiva bring Gangajal from Jangipur in West Bengal and perform Jalabhishek of Bhole Baba. Devotees of Shiva from nearby districts come here in large numbers every year during Mahashivratri and Shravan month for Jalabhishek. On the occasion of Mahashivratri, the image of Baba Maheshwarnath is seen very unique among the crowd of Shiva devotees. Dozens of stories are prevalent about his wonderful glory, which has kept the faith of his devotees unwavering.

Elderly people say that once a long time ago there was a severe drought in Maheshpur. Frustrated people from all sides tried to drown the Shivling in water by surrounding it from all sides to get rid of the drought. Even after a lot of effort, the Shivling did not get submerged, but it rained a lot on the very next day. It is also popular that after getting the news of the Shivling being seen for the first time, the then kings of Maheshpur, known as Sultanabad at that time, tied it with iron chains and lifted it from the ground by elephants for the purpose of installing the Shivling in the palace premises. Tried to remove it, which was unsuccessful. But probably because of this the Shivling is slightly tilted to one side.
