Mumbai, Amid protests by Maharashtra government employees, the Bombay High Court on Friday asked the state government what it was doing to “prevent the menace” of illegal strikes. The court said that common citizens should not be troubled by all this. Acting Chief Justice S.V. A division bench of Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep Marne said this while hearing a petition filed by advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte.
The petition sought a direction to immediately call off the strike by government employees, including those in the teaching and medical sectors. Lakhs of state government employees are on an indefinite strike demanding the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) in Maharashtra.
This is affecting administrative work and many services in the state. Advocate General Birender Saraf told the court that the strike was “illegal” and assured that the state government was making all efforts to ensure that no person was put to hardship due to the strike. The bench asked the government to clearly state what steps it is taking to ensure that people have access to basic amenities and essential services.
The court said, “We are concerned that the common citizens should not be deprived of essential services. Common citizens should not be troubled. We want to know what steps the state is taking to stop this menace. What is the government doing to provide basic facilities and essential services to the people. The court, while listing the matter for March 23, said that people have the right to protest but the government should ensure that it takes appropriate action so that no one is put to trouble.
