Paddy is the main cereal crop of India and Punjab. The area under paddy in Punjab was only 3.9 lakh hectares in 1970-71, which increased to 31.67 lakh hectares in 2022-23. During the same period, the average yield of paddy increased from 27.7 quintals per hectare to 64.8 quintals per hectare.
