Due to pollution, UV rays and ageing, spots start appearing on the skin. Pimples, acne, brown spots, hyperpigmentation – all these are skin problems. Hyperpigmentation and acne scars are sometimes confused as the same thing. While both the problems are completely different (Hyperpigmentation and Acne Scars). Skin experts believe the same. Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta explains the difference between the two in her Instagram post.

First of all know what is hyperpigmentation

The skin gets its color from melanin. Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces excess melanin. Hyperpigmentation causes skin patches to become darker than the surrounding skin. It can affect all skin types. It is more likely to occur during pregnancy, with age, or with an injury.

What are Acne Scars

Acne scars are the result of inflammation in the skin. Acne pores become inflamed and the wall of the pore breaks down. Some acne spots are small, while some are raised. They also get well soon. Sometimes it spreads to the surrounding tissues and causes deep scars.
Despite appearing similar, acne scars are different from hyperpigmentation. The spots formed from post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation leave flat marks on the skin.

Vascular barrier gets affected due to hyperpigmentation

Dr Geetika explains, ‘Brown marks and red marks appear on the skin due to hyperpigmentation. Scratches, cuts, exposure to ultraviolet rays, heat, eczema and over exfoliation can also occur on the skin. Skin inflammation occurs due to injury. The production of melanin can also be high.

Due to all these the vascular response becomes more. The vascular response causes the small blood vessels around the injury to dilate (vasodilatation) and increase blood flow to that area. Endothelial cells initially swell. Then they contract to increase the space between them. Due to which the permeability of the vascular barrier increases.

Skin inflammation caused by acne scars

When acne scars occur, first small pimples appear on the skin. Then the pores swell due to skin inflammation. They break in the follicle wall. Skin picking or skin acne occur if there is no proper treatment. Gene is also responsible behind this. Skin care is most needed during this time.

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of the skin in a particular area. Whereas acne scars change the texture of the skin and leave scars. Pigmentation is usually caused by sunburn or when melanin builds up an extra layer of skin protection. Acne can be caused by scratching the skin or inflammation in the pores. These two conditions are not the same, but are interrelated somewhere. Some simple measures can help in keeping away from them.
