Johnson & Johnson Case: Johnson & Johnson ordered to pay $18.8 million to a California man who said he got cancer from the company’s baby powder.
California man blames company’s talcum powder for cancer. He had alleged that the company hid the health problems caused by the baby powder.
Jurors at the Default State Court in Oakland, USA, concluded on Tuesday (July 18) that J&J’s baby powder caused Anthony Hernandez Valadez to develop mesothelioma, a form of cancer.
Hernandez, 24, said she developed mesothelioma cancer near her breast after using the company’s talcum powder as a child.
J&J, based in New Brunswick NJ, USA, pulled its talc powder from the US and Canadian market in 2020, citing declining sales. The world’s largest health care product maker replaced talcum with a corn starch-based version.
The company plans to remove all of its baby powder containing talcum powder from the market worldwide by the end of this year. J&J officials have said that the company’s baby powder—sold in special white bottles—never contains asbestos.
He said that it is safe and cannot cause cancer. Officials say they are seeking the settlement to avoid lawsuits as well as billions in legal fees and expenses.
