New Delhi. A fresh controversy has erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after some students allegedly vandalized the portrait of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on his birth anniversary on February 19. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has accused Left activists of vandalizing Shivaji’s portrait.

ABVP members claimed that the Leftist students insulted Shivaji when he was paying homage to Shivaji Maharaj. The miscreants allegedly snatched his photograph and garland and threw it on the ground. After which there was a fight between both the sides. Meanwhile, the JNU administration has taken cognizance of the matter, but no action has been taken so far.

Speaking to news agency ANI, ABVP said, “On the occasion of Shivaji Jayanti, we kept a picture in the Student Activity Center but SFI students threw it outside the room, while the garland was thrown in the dustbin.” When we tried to stop them, they said, “We don’t know who these people are. We only follow Marxist and Leninist.” He also claimed that illegal students have occupied the JNU Student Activity Centre.

The general secretary of JNU NSUI said, “ABVP members placed Shivaji’s portrait in the JNUSU office, which required permission from the JNUSU delegation. Despite this, he did it illegally. Other students came there and removed all the portraits for the screening event, which led to a fight between the two groups.”
