President Draupadi Murmu: Controversy over power failure at a function of President Draupadi Murmu in Odisha’s Baripada continues, with the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Mayurbhanj suspending a pharmacist for taking photographs with the President’s helicopter. An official gave this information on Monday. He said that CDMO Dr. Rupbhanu Mishra has suspended Pharmacist Jashobant Behera for taking a picture with the President’s helicopter and posting it on Facebook.

Behra was part of the President’s medical team during his visit to Simlipal National Park on May 5. Behera said, “I put some pictures on my Facebook account just for memory and enjoyment. I had no other intention behind doing this. However, I took verbal permission from some Air Force personnel involved in guarding the helicopter. A great personality like the President had visited the district and I was on duty at the helipad, so wanted to keep the pictures as a souvenir.

He claimed that he had removed the pictures from his Facebook account. These pictures were taken with a mobile phone camera near the helicopter. Meanwhile, the issue of disruption in power supply during the convocation of Maharaja Sriramchandra Bhanja Dev University in the presence of the President has taken a political turn with the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanding inclusion of the country’s first citizen in the convocation ceremony. The Chief Minister should apologize for being kept in the dark for nearly nine minutes during his address.

Union Minister of State for Water Power Bisheshwar Tudu has also demanded the immediate dismissal of the Mayurbhanj District Magistrate and the Vice Chancellor of the University in this case. Mayurbhanj district unit of BJP also targeted the state government. The BJP has demanded a high-level inquiry into the matter. The BJP has also expressed doubts that this has been done to humiliate the President. In a related development, Bhanja Sena, a local organization in Mayurbhanj district, said it would stage a bandh if action was not taken against those responsible for power outages at the President’s programme.
