Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday announced that the athletes who won medals in the recent Asian Games will be given cash prizes and other benefits within 10 days of their return from China.

Addressing the gathering during a discussion with the executive coaches here, the Chief Minister said that the previous governments never cared about the honor of the medal winning players but our government will give top priority to this work. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that our government will ensure that the medal winners are given cash prizes and other benefits as soon as possible after returning home. He said that the only purpose of this is to boost the morale of the players who performed well in the Asian Games held in China.

Appreciating the crucial role of coaches in the life of a player, the Chief Minister said that the role of coaches is important in preparing players for national and international competitions. He said that with the hard work done by the coaches and self-confidence filled in the players, they hit the field. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that this is not a political program, rather its purpose is to honor the coaches for their outstanding contribution in the career of the players.

The Chief Minister said that Punjab has very good sportsmen who have proved their abilities in the recent Asian Games. Players of Punjab have won many medals in these games. He said that on the one hand the credit goes to the dedication of the players, on the other hand the leading role played by the coaches cannot be denied. Bhagwant Singh Mann congratulated these players and coaches for their excellent display of sportsmanship in the Asian Games.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is committed to revive the sports culture in Punjab and coaches can play an important role in this. He said that the Punjab government is making efforts to eradicate drugs from the state and therefore sports are being encouraged. Bhagwant Singh Mann hoped that coaches can play the role of a motivator to make Punjab drug free by promoting sports.

The Chief Minister also said that due to the strenuous efforts of the state government, these players of Punjab have earned fame for the state. He said that the state government is giving cash prizes and other facilities to the players who have performed well in national and international competitions. Bhagwant Singh Mann further said that this is the first time in history, when financial assistance is being given to the players of Punjab for the preparation of international competitions.

The Chief Minister said that the coaches are the most important in preparing the players by being aware of the new technologies that have come in the field of sports. He said that this has helped in making the players better able to cope with future challenges. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that it is a happy occasion for us that out of 48 players from Punjab who went to the Asian Games, 33 won a total of 19 medals, out of which eight gold, six silver and five silver medals were won. He said that this time Punjab players have won the most medals in the history of Asian Games after independence.

The Chief Minister said that the coaches put in a lot of effort to produce diamonds in the field of sports and by the grace of God, they got this responsibility. He said that the state government is committed to the welfare of the players and coaches for which concrete efforts are being made. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that it is a matter of pride and satisfaction that his government has regularized the services of more than 12000 teachers and doubled it by increasing the salary of executive coaches.

The Chief Minister said that the state government has given government jobs to more than 37000 youth so far. He said that now competition is going on in the villages to get more government jobs. He said that this is just the beginning, another 2.89 lakh jobs will be provided in the private sector. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government is committed to channelize the boundless energy of the youth in the right direction.

The Chief Minister lamented that the previous governments in Punjab had badly neglected the sports sector, which caused a huge loss to the state. The Chief Minister said that his government is working hard to restore the ancient glory in the field of sports. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that his government is strengthening the sports infrastructure in the state so that emerging sportsmen can get world-class facilities.

On this occasion, Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare welcomed all dignitaries.

Meanwhile, two coaches Nitish Thakur and Jagbir Singh thanked the Chief Minister for increasing the salaries. He said that this initiative will help promote sports culture in the state. He thanked the Chief Minister for accepting the long-pending demand for salary hike and said that with this he will perform his duties with more dedication and enthusiasm.
