A citizen of Ireland has had her Australian visa cancelled and is now being forced to leave the country as there are suspicions she could be a Russian spy.
The Irish citizen, Marina Sologub, is an ethnic Russian born in Kazakhstan and is 39 years old. Irish Central explains that she grew up in Glanmire, Cork and has links with Russians who have already had their Australian visas cancelled.
Since she has links with other suspects and presents a national security threat, according to the authorities, she will no longer be permitted to remain in Australia, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The Irish citizen moved to Australia back in 2020 on a talent visa and has been working in the space industry. According to Irish Central, she had built a career in this sector and created links to the defence industry of Ireland during the time she lived in Ireland.
During the time Sologub resided in Ireland, she worked in Cork with the National Space Centre and also helped in setting up the Irish Space Industry Group with the intention of permitting other companies to cooperate on different projects and promote the space sector of Ireland.
It has been revealed that as soon as the Australian authorities were suspicious of Sologub, the National Security Committee started to investigate all of her activities during her employment in Australia.
Even though the authorities have not yet revealed any official information on the investigation, it is believed that the Irish citizen did not have access to sensitive information that could put the National Security Committee at risk.
Commenting on the matter, the Deputy Leader and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland, Micheál Martin, said that this is an issue that Australia can deal with without having to necessarily contact the Irish authorities, suggesting that Australia can take any decision it wants as long as its national security is being put at risk.
“The Australian government, it’s a matter for them in terms of their security situation, and they don’t necessarily contact us in respect of security concerns that they have or in respect of deportations that they make as a result of security concerns,” the statement of Minister Martin reads.
Similar cases have happened in other countries too, and all those who have been suspicious of Russian spy allegations have had their visa cancelled and have been asked immediately to leave the country.
EU already has a sanctions list. The sanction list of the EU gets updated as needed, and it includes tens of Russian individuals and entities involved in activities that could put at risk the national security of the bloc.
