The flag hoisting ceremony is performed on 15th August which has certain rules. According to the rules, a person should be selected to hoist the flag who can follow these rules. The flag must be hoisted before sunset, it is prohibited after sunset. Special care should be taken while hoisting the tricolor as well as while lowering it. The tricolor being used should not be torn in any way and should not be dirty in any way.

What is Indian Flag Code?

Flag Code of India was implemented on 26 January 2002. Under this, many rules were implemented. Some of the prominent among these rules are-

  • The place where the flag is hoisted should be given a proper place and it should be hoisted in a place where it can be seen by all.
  • If any flag is to be planted along with the tricolor, its place should be below the tricolor.
  • If the tricolor is cut or torn due to any reason, it should be destroyed alone.
  • If a flag is being hoisted on a stage, the speaker should face forward and the flag should be to his right.
  • The shape of the flag should be rectangular and its length to width ratio should be 3:2.
  • Ashoka Chakra must have 24 lines.
  • The tricolor must not touch the ground in any way.
  • Before the implementation of the Flag Code of India in the year 2002, the tricolor was hoisted by common people only on January 26 or January 15.
  • It used to be hoisted in August but now with the new rules anyone can hoist the tricolor at any time in a limited manner.
