We are talking about the freedom fighter Sharma family living in Ravinder Nagar of Jalandhar city, who suffered many tortures for the freedom of the country and also went to jail during the British rule.
Every year on 15th August and 26th January, the freedom fighter family living in Ravindra Nagar is invited by the government and administration to honor them. But the governments of our country could not do anything for the same family who fought for the freedom of the country.
The well-known Sharma family in Ravinder Nagar of Jalandhar fought for the freedom of the country and today we are introducing you to the head of the same family. TV9 team interviewed 95-year-old Dev Brat Sharma for the country’s independence. Talked specifically about independence and partition. Dev Brat Sharma said that he was born in village Khankhana of Halka Banga of Nawanshahr in 1928 and got his education from there.
Flag hoisted on a British prison
At the age of 14, he was caught by the British police on charges of distributing freedom material and thrown into prison, after which he was tortured. He said that his father Pandit Mulraj Sharma was a great freedom fighter. When the British imprisoned him, his father made a flag out of small pieces of cloth and hoisted it over the British jail.
He said that his father’s friend Babu Labh Singh was killed during the violence in 1947. Ranek Bazar of Jalandhar was the area of Muslim community at that time. He said that he still remembers the scene when there was tremendous violence between Hindu-Muslim people at the time of partition. No one helped those who wanted to go to Pakistan from here.
Regarding conversion, it was said that there was no such thing at that time and no one was being converted. He said that he had no contribution in India-Pakistan war, but when Pakistan dropped bombs in India, he was also panicked like the people.
The government did not help
95-year-old Dev Brat Sharma said that on one hand, when the country got independence, on the other hand, there was violence during the partition of India-Pakistan and the people of the Muslim community had started sending the dead bodies of Hindu people from Pakistan to India by train. He said that he acquired education on his own and also acquired a lawyer’s degree.
Devvarat Sharma said that on August 15 and January 26, the government and the administration call to honor him, but till date no government has helped him and his family. Let us tell you that the memory of 95-year-old Dev Brat Sharma has become somewhat blurred due to old age.
The British police locked him in jail
Rajesh Sharma, son of freedom fighter Devvarat Sharma, said that in 1942, at the age of 14, his father was jailed by the British police for distributing freedom materials and was beaten with an iron bar. The traces are still there today. They have prints on their backs. His father was subjected to many tortures. After the independence and partition of the country, his father went through many bad situations.
The Muslims present there moved to Pakistan and a lot of blood was shed at that time. In which many Hindus and many Muslims were killed. Cars full of dead bodies of Hindus used to come from Pakistan at that time. Rajat said that his father was born in village Khankhana and he studied there for 14 years. His grandfather came to Jalandhar in 1920.
Rajat also did not tell that Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s father and grandfather had mutual brotherhood and their brothers used to visit each other’s houses. He said that the government and leaders should come and honor his father as the number of freedom fighters has reduced to a very small number. He said that till date no help has been given to him by the government and the administration.
