Drugs Case in India: Punjab ranks third in terms of drug trade, drug addiction, abuse and smuggling, with the highest number of FIRs registered under the NDPS Act in the three years between 2019 and 2021. The Union Home Ministry has placed this information before the nation in the Rajya Sabha.

Minister of State for Home Nityananda Roy on Thursday gave full details of the number of FIRs registered under the NDPS Act across the country. Nityanand Roy also explained in detail about the various measures taken by the central and state governments to prevent drug addiction in the country.

Answering a question posed by Congress MP KC Venugopal, he said that between the years 2019 and 2021, Uttar Pradesh (31,482) has registered the highest number of drug-related FIRs. It is followed by Maharashtra (28,959) and Punjab (28,417). Statistics show that 11,536 FIRs were registered under the NDPS Act in 2019, 6909 in 2020 and 9972 in 2021 in Punjab.

Punjab CM Mann declared war against drugs in Punjab

Last month, the Punjab Police had shared the data of the special anti-drug campaign launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after the announcement in this regard in July 2021. It added that as part of the Chief Minister’s war on drugs, 12,218 FIRs were registered under the NDPS Act in the one-year period from July 5, 2022 to July 7, 2023. The data shared by the Union Home Ministry also shows that there has been a significant decrease in such cases in Punjab in 2020.

Campaign to make the Narcotics Control Bureau stronger and more effective

The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs said that the government has decided to set up four new regional offices of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) at Amritsar, Guwahati, Chennai and Ahmedabad and five new regional offices at Gorakhpur, New Jalpaiguri, Agartala, Pasighat/Lower Siang and Raipur. Approved.

The minister said that 12 sub-zonal offices of NCB have been approved as zonal offices at Amritsar, Dehradun, Srinagar, Jaipur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Goa, Bhopal, Cochin, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad. Apart from this, 425 new posts have also been created in NCB to strengthen the organizational structure.
