Road accidents (Road Accidents) Punjab is at the third number in the country. The death rate in Punjab is 77.5 percent, while the national average death rate is 28 percent. Mizoram has the highest mortality rate (85 percent) followed by Bihar (82.4 percent).

There has been a decrease in road accidents in Ludhiana district of the state. Compared to last year, the number of people who died in road accidents has decreased this year. According to the Ministry of Roads and Transport, around 364 people lost their lives in road accidents this year, down from the 380 deaths recorded in 2021, but Ludhiana still topped the list with a fatality rate of 78 percent.

In Ludhiana, the ranking improved by one point due to a drop in the death rate. Earlier in 2021 Ludhiana city was at 14th place. With the latest report of death rate in road accidents, Ludhiana has now reached the 15th position.

The report only includes deaths on the spot

Dr Kamal Soi, a member of the National Road Safety Council, said that the figures included in the report may differ from the actual number of road deaths as the authorities have only included on-the-spot deaths in the report.

The authorities have not included cases in which the police take action under Section 174 of the CrPC after reaching an agreement between the accused and the family members of the victims.

The biggest cause of accidents is speeding

According to the report, most of the road accidents happen due to driving at high speed. At least 60.9% of road accidents are caused by speeding. Soi said the police need to take action against over speeding vehicles. People drive at over speed even on inner city roads.
