Hyundai Eyes Rural Market: Vehicle maker Hyundai Motor India is looking at growth opportunities in rural India on the back of growing demand for sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and new feature models.

The country’s second largest carmaker is looking to increase its presence in smaller towns and rural areas by opening more sales showrooms as well as through methods like mobile service vans.

Hyundai already has more than 600 sales showrooms in rural areas and has increased its workforce to more than 5,000 in such locations. Hyundai’s vehicle sales figure in rural areas crossed one lakh units last year.

The company’s chief operating officer Tarun Garg said, about 18 per cent of our total sales are coming from rural areas as against 16.5 per cent earlier. We have improved on this front. For the first time, we crossed the one lakh unit sales mark last year. We now have 100 mobile service vans in rural areas.

Garg said, the difference between urban and rural markets is reducing now, because now so many people are using mobile and internet that every information reaches them.

He said that earlier small vehicles were given preference in rural markets, but now models like Creta, Venue have also grown rapidly. Now the expectations of most rural consumers have also become similar to those of urban consumers.

On the question of increasing presence in rural areas, he said, of course. We have a very fast and strong plan in this direction and will continue to increase it. The company has 1,400 showrooms across the country, out of which around 600 showrooms are present in rural areas. (with language input)
