Your body mass index (BMI) is a way to tell if you are overweight or obese. Generally, a BMI of 25 or more means you are overweight and a BMI of 30 or more is classified as obese.

Visceral fat is responsible

The British Heart Foundation says that BMI can reduce the risk of heart disease. Being overweight or storing fat around your mid-section increases your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.

In general, if a man’s waist is more than 94 cm (37 inches) or a woman’s waist is more than 80 cm (31½ inches), he may be at risk of a heart attack. Generally, excess weight in the middle of the body means that you have a lot of visceral fat in your body. Visceral fat accumulates around organs like your liver and pancreas and is quite stubborn, says the BHF.

Visceral fat creates toxins that affect the way your body works. This makes it difficult for your body to use the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar (sugar) levels. This can lead to type 2 diabetes. Too much glucose in the bloodstream can damage your arteries and increase your risk of heart disease.

Keep these things in mind while measuring the waist with a tape

– Place the tape below the navel.
– When measuring the waist, check that the tape is well tightened.
– Do not wear clothes while measuring the waist.
– Do not hold your breath while measuring the waist.
Measure your waist a second time to confirm.
