Greece is expected to welcome a large number of tourists from Germany this year after this the Hellenic Republic is among the top five summer travel destinations for Germans.

The President of the German Travel Association (DRV), Norbert Fiebig, has revealed that the top five travel destinations for German travellers are Turkey, Spain, Greece, and Egypt as well as Portgual, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

His comments came at the opening press conference of the ITB Berlin 2023 tourism exhibition held in Germany, while he noted that trends are pointed towards an optimistic outlook for travel this year.

โ€œGermany wants to travel! The early birds are back and the travel agencies and tour operators have entered into this year at full speed,โ€ Fiebig pointed out.

Based on a study conducted by Travel Data + Analytics (TDA*) for DRV, nearly 40 per cent of the total booking revenue for the upcoming summer will be generated by destinations of the Eastern Mediterranean with the Hellenic Republic, Turkey and Egypt.

โ€œThis makes us confident for the travel year 2023, despite the well-known uncertainties of global political and economic developments. We almost hit the target in the summer of 2022. Only 2 per cent missing in order to beat the summer record of 2019,โ€ he pointed out.

Fiebig has considered the signs for the whole vacation year are good with optimism based not just on the re-emerging trend toward early booking for the summer. He stressed that a large part of those planning to go on vacation is still booking for the winter season, which is still ongoing until the end of the coming month.

The data reveal that for the Easter vacations in April this year, the majority of those who booked a package tour prefer the following destinations:

  • Egypt
  • The Canary Islands and Turkey
  • Balearic Island
  • The Maldives
  • Greece
  • The United Arab Emirates

In addition, Thailand, Portugal, as well as the Dominican Republic, accounting for the rest of the ten destinations most in demand.

As for May, Spain, Greece and Turkey account for 65 per cent of the total. Fiebig stressed that cruise bookings are also notably high this year.

โ€œThe cruise industry already made an impressive recovery last year after heavy Corona losses. Germans want to get back on the cruise ships โ€“ both at the sea and on the rivers. Travel agents surveyed by us see cruising as a major trend this year,โ€ he noted.

Long-haul destinations such US, Maldives as well as Mauritius also marked a notable increase.
