San Francisco: Google’s parent company Alphabet recently laid off 12,000 employees and 100 robots cleaning the cafeteria at its headquarters. As Wired reports, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has shut down Alphabet’s ‘Everyday Robots’ project under Google’s Experimental X Laboratories.
As part of the project, 100 one-armed, wheeled robots were trained to help clean the company’s cafeteria. Many of these robot prototypes were taken out of the lab and doing useful work at Google facilities. These robots used to clean tables as well as do the work of separating and recycling garbage.
The robot also helped keep conference rooms clean during the pandemic. With the Robot Division now closed, some of its technology can be used for other divisions. Alphabet has over the years developed a hardware and software system for learning that involves knowledge transfer from the visual to the real world.
Robots gradually gained a greater grasp on the world around them and became more adept at performing common activities using machine learning techniques.
In an effort to further cut costs, Google has also asked employees returning to work to share their work desks with a partner in order to maximize office space.
