Good news from India’s farms after the budget, wheat acreage increased to 343.23 lakh hectares

With the sowing of winter crops coming to an end, the total area sown to wheat in the rabi season of crop year 2022-23 (July-June) increased by just 1.39 lakh hectares to 343.23 lakh hectares (ha) as compared to the same period last year Is. This information has been given in the data of the Ministry of Agriculture released on Friday. Sowing of the main rabi (winter) crop, wheat, begins in October and is harvested in March/April. Gram and mustard are other major crops grown in this season.

The data shows that the total sowing area of โ€‹โ€‹all rabi crops has increased to 720.68 lakh hectare in rabi season of 2022-23 crop year from 697.98 lakh hectare in the same period a year ago. Appreciating the increase in cultivation of rabi crops, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, “It is the result of the combined efforts of our hardworking farmer brothers and sisters, agricultural scientists and the farmer-friendly policies of the Narendra Modi government.”

As per the final data released by the ministry, the area under wheat has increased to 343.23 lakh hectare in the current crop year till February 3 from 341.84 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Sowing area has been 2.52 lakh hectare in Rajasthan, 1.03 lakh hectare in Maharashtra, 94 thousand hectare in Bihar and 93 thousand hectare in Uttar Pradesh. In the case of paddy, there has been a sharp increase in area under cultivation at 46.25 lakh hectare in this year’s rabi season as against 35.05 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.

Telangana and West Bengal have registered the maximum increase in the area under paddy cultivation. The ministry said in a statement that the area under paddy cultivation is being diverted to other less water-intensive oilseeds, pulses and nutritious cereals. The area under pulses has marginally increased to 167.86 lakh hectare in the rabi season this year, as against 167.31 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Out of which, the area under gram cultivation decreased by 2.16 lakh hectare to 112.01 lakh hectare as compared to the same period a year ago.

In case of oilseeds, the ministry said sowing area increased marginally to 109.84 lakh hectare in this year’s rabi season as against 102.36 lakh hectare in the year-ago period. Out of this, the area under rapeseed-mustard is 98.02 lakh hectare. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have major contribution in the increase in area under oilseeds cultivation. The area sown to nutritious coarse cereals also increased marginally to 53.49 lakh hectare as compared to 51.49 lakh hectare earlier.
