The government of Gibraltar has explained to all its residents holding red ID cards that they should be able to continue crossing the Spanish border without having their passports stamped or giving a reason for their entry into the country.
Such an explanation from the government of Gibraltar was given following a number of reports from red ID card holders who said that they were being asked about the purpose of their entry to Spain and had their passports stamped by the border authorities, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Through an official press release, the government of Gibraltar said that the stamping of passports of residents of Gibraltar holding red ID cards appears to have been carried out by officers who were unaware of the agreements the two countries have.
The same emphasised that such actions have been sporadic, suggesting that this happened occasionally.
“HM Government of Gibraltar understands that this appears to have been sporadic and carried out by officers who were unaware of the detail of the interim arrangements agreed by Spain for the Gibraltar border,” the statement of the government of Gibraltar reads.
In addition to the above-mentioned, the government of Gibraltar stressed that the passports of Gibraltar red ID card holders should only be stamped if they are entering Spain and then travelling to another EU/Schengen Area country.
In those cases, the government suggested that its residents may be required to provide a reason for travel. On the other hand, those planning to only visit Spain should not be required to provide a reason for travel.
“The Government understands that the position remains that Gibraltar red ID card holders should not be stamped unless they are travelling for onward travel outside Spainl,” the Gibraltar government stressed.
The government further reminded everyone that it is their responsibility to request at the Gibraltar border with Spain to have their passports stamped if they plan to travel further outside Spain.
While Gibraltar red ID card holders can enter Spain under facilitated rules, the case is not the same for the others. Since the UK has left the European Union, Gibraltar residents are now considered third-country nationals, and in line with the EU rules, they must provide a reason for travel and have their passports stamped.
Additionally, they must give information about where they will be staying in the EU and when they will be returning. They must also prove that they have sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay in the bloc.
