A total of 24.0 million visitors stayed in accommodation establishments in Germany during January of this year, marking an increase of 48.3 per cent compared to January of last year, the Federal Office of Statistics (Destatis) has revealed.
According to Destatis, even though the country saw an increase in tourist overnight stays in January 2023, the numbers still remained 10.5 per cent lower than in the same period in 2020.
However, now that the COVID-19 restrictions have been fully lifted, it is expected for the tourist overnight stays to reach the pre-pandemic levels this year, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
January 2023 is not the only month in which Germany’s accommodation establishments saw an increase. Destatis figures previously showed that the number of overnight stays improved by 21.8 per cent in November compared to a year ago. During this month, the number of nights spent in German accommodation establishments reached 29.8 million.
The busiest months in 2022 in terms of stays in Germany were July and August, with 56.3 and 58.2 million nights spent, respectively. Meanwhile, in 2021, the highest number of overnight stays was recorded in August with 55.9 million.
On the other hand, other months recorded significantly fewer nights, such as 47.9 million overnights in July and 45.1 million in September.
Compared to January 2019, overnight stays fell by 39 per cent in January 2022, reaching 16.2 million in total compared to 26.9 million recorded at the same time in 2020.
Further Destatis figures reveal that the tourism industry in the country has recovered significantly in the past year, but is still behind the pre-pandemic levels.
According to Destatis data, Germany registered about 450.8 million overnight stays in 2022which represents an increase of 45.3 per cent compared to the same month in 2021.
However, comparing data from the period before the pandemic, the number of overnight stays registered in Germany has fallen behind by 9.1 per cent in 2022.
Recently, the German travel giant TUI reported an increase in bookings at the beginning of 2023. In this regard, CEO Stefan Baumert said that in this period the business had been stronger than the company had seen for a long time.
According to the company, its competitor Alltours has already surpassed 2019 figures for both guests and sales last year. The same added that the demand for this summer was also strong, calculating a 30 per cent increase in the number of passengers, compared to the summer of 2022.
