Efforts are on to evacuate the workers trapped in the tunnel under construction in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi. Today is the 12th day of the rescue operation being carried out for the workers. Rescue operation is in final stage. It is expected that the workers may come out in the next 10 to 12 hours. Workers are stuck inside for so many days due to which they are at risk of many health problems. There is lack of oxygen in the tunnel and workers are not being fed accordingly. In such a case, their health may deteriorate. Doctors say that as soon as the workers go out, they have to be taken to the hospital immediately. They can have many types of infections.

Risk of infection

Prof. Dr. Jugal Kishore, HOD, Department of Community Medicine, Safdarjung Hospital, says that the workers have been trapped in the tunnel for several days. There is a lack of oxygen in the tunnel, due to which the workers may get an infection in the lungs. Due to this there is a risk of various respiratory diseases. There is also a possibility of water accumulation in the lungs, which may later affect their health. Many workers may also become very weak. In such a case, they may become unconscious. Dehydration will also occur due to lack of water in the body.

Skin and eye diseases

Dr. Kishore says that the workers are crowded in the tunnel and there is no information about how much space there is and what bacteria are growing there. There is a risk of many skin related diseases due to bacteria and fungi. It can cause itching and infections like ringworm. Workers trapped in the tunnel may also suffer from eye diseases. Because they have not seen natural light for so many days. In such a situation, the optic nerve of the eyes can be damaged. Due to which the problem of eye infection and vision impairment can occur.

Risk of mental trauma

Dr. AK Kumar of the Department of Psychiatry, District Hospital, Ghaziabad, says that some workers may have phobias. This is because they have been trapped in that tunnel for so many days, where it is dark and there is no contact with the outside world. At the same time, there is a constant fear that they will be able to get out or not. The condition of the workers who are struggling for life may also deteriorate. Due to this, they are prone to anxiety and depression. If the depression is severe, it can last for several months. In such a situation, it is necessary that after treating all the workers, they should also be counseled by psychiatrists. So that their mental condition does not deteriorate in the future.
