Finnish Airports Registered 15.6 Million Passengers Last Year, Statistics Reveal

A total of 15.6 million passengers flew through the airports of Finland last year, representing a three-time increase compared to 2021, Statistics Finland has revealed.

According to the latest Finnish statistics, even though the countryโ€™s airport saw a high number of passengers in 2022, the figures still remained over ten million lower last year than before the COVID-19 pandemic, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Data show that 12.2 million passengers travelled on international flights and 3.4 million of them on domestic flights. Moreover, it has been noted that compared to the previous two years, the relative proportion of international transport has returned to the pre-pandemic level.

โ€œCompared to the previous two years, the relative share of international transport has returned to the level prior to the corona pandemic and 78 per cent of passengers, or 12.2 million, flew in international transport and 22 per cent, or 3.4 million passengers in domestic transport,โ€ the statement of Statistics Finland reads.

During 2022, a total of 14.7 million passengers travelled on scheduled international flights and 900,000 on international charter flights. Meanwhile, the number of passengers on charter flights was 27 per cent lower and on scheduled flights was 41 per cent lower compared to the pre-pandemic period โ€“ 2019.

Overall, 13.0 million passengers flew through the main international airport of Finland, Helsinki Airport, and 2.6 million passengers flew through other domestic airports. In addition, Helsinki Airport accounted for 83 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.

Compared to 2021, the volume of air transport of goods and mail had a decrease of four per cent last year. Finnish statistics show that the transport of goods and mail reached 172,741 tons in total, and 99 per cent of the tons were transported through Helsinki Airport.

Between Finland and foreign countries, 99 per cent of the freight tons were transported, while 94,151 tons of the transported volume of goods were outgoing and 78,591 tons were incoming goods.

Previously, Statistics Finland revealed that 1.5 million passengers flew through Finnish airports in January this yearmarking a 78 per cent increase compared to 2022, but still a quarter lower than in January 2019.

The authority also showed that during this period the number of passengers on domestic flights increased by 57 per cent, while international flights by 86 per cent compared to January last year.

In January 2023, a total of 1.1 million passengers flew through Helsinki Airport and a total of 0.3 million passengers flew through the countryโ€™s other airports. It also accounted for 77 per cent of all passengers at domestic airports.
