Financial assistance is being given to needy women under acid attack victim scheme: Dr. Baljit Kaur

The Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development is committed to the welfare of destitute and needy women. Punjab Government provides 100 percent financial assistance to women victims of acid attack. The aim of the Acid Victim Scheme is to provide monthly financial assistance to women who have become disabled due to acid attack attacks.

Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development Dr. Baljit Kaur said that attack through acid attack is a heinous form of violence against women, which is done deliberately by the perpetrator. This causes permanent or partial damage to the victim’s body or any part of the body. Due to this, not only mental and physical pain but also many other types of infections, blindness etc. are seen prominently. Apart from this, social and economic negative effects also adversely affect women’s lives.

The minister said that under the fully state-run financial assistance scheme for women suffering from acidosis by the Punjab government, women residents of Punjab state with 40% or more disability (bench mark disability) who are suffering from acidosis will be rehabilitated and self-sufficient. 8,000 per month is given for making a dependent. A copy of the FIR/complaint should be registered by the aggrieved woman. He said that at present 22 acid attack victim women are taking financial benefits under this scheme in District Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Ropar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Moga, Jalandhar and Amritsar.

The Cabinet Minister explained about the scheme being run for the victims of acid attack attack. He highlighted the case of Ramandeep Kaur of Amritsar district, who is getting a financial benefit of Rs 10 lakh. Dr. Baljit Kaur said that Mahinder Kaur of Bathinda district is undergoing treatment at DMC Ludhiana, while Amanpreet Kaur is undergoing treatment at Fortis Hospital Mohali, both of them are being given financial assistance under this scheme.

Ramandeep Kaur of Ludhiana district is using financial assistance from the Punjab government to meet the school fees and daily needs of her two daughters and one son, thereby ensuring a stable livelihood.
