The European Union ambassador in the Dominican Republic, Katja Afheldt, has denied the statement of Pasaportes RD Director, Digna Reynoso, who said that Dominicans who hold an electronic passport will be able to travel to the European Union visa-free.
Ambassador Afheldt said that the EU is not reviewing the visa system and it is not planning to expand the list of countries whose citizens are permitted to enter the EU without obtaining a Schengen visa, confirming that the visa requirement will continue to remain in place for all Dominicans, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
Diario Digital explains that ambassador Afheldt said that the EU is currently dealing with other issues related to migration and has not thought of making Schengen visa-related changes.
“It is not that the Dominican Republic is on the black list of countries, only that for the moment we cannot open that list because in Europe we are in a moment of reflection on migration policy,” ambassador Afheldt stated.
Following the statement of Reynoso who said earlier this week that all citizens of the Dominican Republic holding a biometric passport will be permitted visa-free entry to the EU from 2025, ambassador Afheldt emphasised that a biometric passport is not all it takes to be exempt from the visa rule.
Ambassador Afheldt highlighted that the Dominican Republic has to fulfil several other steps before the EU decides to drop the visa requirement for its citizens.
Currently, all citizens of the Dominican Republic need to obtain a Schengen visa in order to be permitted entry to the bloc as the country has not yet reached a visa liberalisation with the EU.
A Schengen visa is a short-term visa that allows all of its holders to enter the Schengen area for stays of up to 90 days within a six-month period for tourism or business purposes.
Citizens of the Dominican Republic must submit several documents when applying for a Schengen visa. They must submit a completed visa application formtheir Dominican passport and a copy of it, two passport-sized picturesand a civil status certificate.
Moreover, they must also submit proof of having secured a place to stay in the EU, proof of having purchased EU travel health insurance, a booked flight reservation, proof of paid visa feecopies of previous Schengen visas, and proof of having sufficient financial means.
Depending on the employment status of applicants, additional documents such as an employment contract and a cover letter may be required too.
