Estonia: Over 196,000 Tourists Stayed In Accommodation Establishments in January 2023

Statistics Estonia has revealed that in January of this year, Estonia’s accommodation establishments registered over 196,000 tourists, marking an increase of 24 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The increase in the number of tourists was welcomed by Statistics Estonia analyst Helga Laurmaa, who said that during January 2023, more than 82,000 foreign tourists and over 114,000 locals were accommodated in the country, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Meanwhile, compared to January 2022, there were 54 per cent more foreign tourists, but still less than in January 2020.

“The number of accommodated foreign tourists was similar to the figure in January 2017. The number of domestic tourists increased by nine per cent year on year and set an all-time record for January,” Laurmaa added.

According to Estonian statistics, the largest number of foreign visitors to Estonia came from Finland with around 29,000 visitors, and Latvia with approximately 14,000 visitors. Data show that during January 2023 there were three times more Finnish tourists than in January last year, while the number of Latvian tourists increased by 31 per cent.

At the same time, an increase in tourists from January last year was also observed from Lithuania, Germany, Great Britain, the USA, and Asian countries.

As for the places visitors stayed at, it has been disclosed that a total of 79 per cent of foreign tourists stayed in accommodation facilities in Harju county, followed by Pärnu with eight per cent, Tartu with six per cent, and Ida-Viru with two per cent. These tourists also spent a total of 170,000 nights in Estonia.

Further data from Statistics Estonia show that for 68 per cent of domestic tourists, the purpose of their trip was to relax and 24 per cent said they were on business trips.

Thus, 33 percent of them were accommodated in Harju county, 13 per cent in Tartu county, 12 per cent in Pärnu county, and ten per cent in Ida-Viru county. At the same time, eight per cent of domestic tourists stayed overnight in Valga county and six per cent in Lääne-Viru county. Domestic tourists spent a total of 193,000 nights in accommodation establishments.

Moreover, in January of this year, 913 accommodation establishments were made available to tourists who came to Estonia. So there were 21,000 rooms and 47,000 beds available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 35 per cent, while the average cost of a guest night was €44 per person, which is eight euros more expensive than in 2022 and six euros more expensive than in January 2020.

Besides, in Lääne county -In Viru, the average cost of one night’s stay per person was €51, in Tartu county was €48, up to €46 in Harju and Ida-Viru counties and €37 in Pärnu county.
