Ranchi: At least 16 people have died allegedly in an elephant attack in five districts of Jharkhand in the last 12 days. Four of these people died in Ranchi on Tuesday. Forest officials gave this information.
Ranchi’s Divisional Forest Officer Shrikant Verma said that under Section 144, the administration has imposed prohibitory orders in Itki block and prohibited gathering of more than five people at one place, so that more people do not get killed in elephant attacks. He said that the villagers of this block have been asked to stay indoors especially in the morning and evening, they have also been advised not to go near any elephant.

Verma told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘Villagers are crowding around the elephant due to which a person died today. Section 144 was imposed today in Itki block in an attempt to stop them from mobilizing.” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Shashikar Samant said that the forest department is taking all possible steps, including taking the help of an expert team from West Bengal, to bring the elephant under control, which will attack Hazaribagh, Ramgarh, Chatra, Lohardaga and Ranchi districts in 12 days. I am suspected of killing 16 people.
He told ‘PTI-Bhasha’, ‘We have formed a committee of forest officers of four divisions under the leadership of Ranchi Forest Conservator. The committee will decide whether all the 16 people died in the same elephant attack. If the committee comes to this conclusion, we will take a decision in a day or two.” He said, “It seems that the elephant is behaving like a drunk. The committee will find out whether the elephant is deliberately attacking people or people themselves are responsible for its death.”
