Director Sevak Cheema talks about the inspiration behind his film Making Somewhere and which director he likes. Sevak Cheema is a Punjabi-Canadian director who has worked in Brampton since 2019.
His music videos have been featured on many Punjabi artists including Gurlez Akhtar, Ravneet (Kantinimandar) Savi, Sharan Sidhu and Raj Fatehpur. In recent years he has directed videos for songs like “Patlayangahe” by Gurlez Akhtar, which went viral on YouTube.
In 2016, Sevak Cheema worked as an assistant director with a director in Amritsar. As an assistant director, Sevak had no control over the projects. He would only help the director in finding actresses and finding the locations of the actors in the video.
He said that he was a big fan of Hollywood movies and he and his brother used to watch a lot of Hollywood movies. He said “Film making fascinated me from childhood. It is solitary, laborious, and time consuming as well as the most creative poet.
He started his film career as an assistant director and later became an independent filmmaker/director based in Chandigarh, Punjab.
The desire to learn more about the art of film making brought me to the world of Punjabi music. The first few years were tough, but an opportunity came in 2018 when he directed a music video for singer Shvi. This was a turning point in his career as a video producer and since then he has worked with various companies including directors, producers and editors. Made more than 30 music videos
Sevak said, I aspired to see and understand what goes on behind the scenes of a music video shoot – every step from thinking of an idea to its full execution requires a lot of thought and brainstorming. Which is why I really enjoy working in it!
Soon after moving to Chandigarh he met Raj Fatehpur for a project, he was impressed with Sevak’s work and recommended my name to direct the music video for ‘Akhrisalam’ by artiste Sharan Sidhu, released in 2017. He worked with them on several music videos, which are still popular.
During this period he shot 10 music video songs in a year for various artists who were released during that period. The most important point was that he gave his best performance and made a mark in the industry with these videos.
He made sure to take care of all the details while making these music videos as these were his first works and they had a huge impact on his career as well as his personal life.
It was not an easy task to work with such big names in the industry but there was a yearning in me that made it easy for me to work with them without any stress or fear of failure.
He is a big fan of music videos and he watches every new video.
There are some directors who he said influence him, such as Jashan Nannhar, Baljit Singh Deo and others. His work has also inspired him to make music videos!
Servant said “I think if you love something there is no reason why it won’t work for you; He who has passion will surely succeed one day.
We hope to see more of his music videos in the future. He said that his next goal is to make a short film.
