Crowd of farmers gathered at the seed counter on the first day of Pusa Krishi-Fair, Delhi Police had to intervene

Pusa Agriculture Fair: Hundreds of farmers, who thronged the famous Krishi Vigyan Mela organized at the Pusa campus here, faced a lot of inconvenience while procuring seeds and complained about the poor management of the organizer IARI. The crowd to buy seeds was so large that the Delhi Police had to intervene to control the crowd. To avoid uproar, the seed counter was also closely guarded by the security personnel.

Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar inaugurated the three-day annual Pusa Krishi Vigyan Mela organized by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) today. Sale of seeds developed by IARI has always been the main attraction of the Mela and farmers from states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Bihar come here to buy quality Pusa seeds. A large counter for the sale of seeds has been set up at the mela, where IARI plans to sell varieties of basmati rice as well as paddy seeds including moong till March 4.

Crowd of farmers to buy seeds

There was a huge crowd of farmers to buy seeds on the first day of the fair. Many farmers reached the program venue at 5 am to collect the purchase slip and waited till 10 am for the counter to open. Rajneesh Kumar, a farmer from Fazilka in Punjab, said – The counter opened but had to be closed midway due to crowding. The farmers, who had been waiting since morning, became impatient and started fighting with the sales counter officials. I am still standing in the queue waiting for my turn. Kumar, who cultivates thirty acres of land, wants to buy 10 kg each of IARI’s new Basmati rice varieties and Pusa-1845, Pusa-1847, and Pusa-1886. They cannot get the new varieties as their sale has been canceled due to high demand.

Sales counters will re-open soon

Kuldeep, another farmer from Haryana’s Hisar said that- Police had come to handle the crowd and I hope the sales counters will reopen soon, I will buy seeds and return home. Mohan Lal, a farmer from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi district, said that he has been coming to the Pusa fair for the last 25 years to buy seeds and this time he wants to try new varieties of vegetables. While waiting for his turn at the counter, he said – Quality seed is important in agriculture. It is worth the hassle of coming here to buy quality Pusa seeds.
