Congress: Discussion on opposition unity in the convention! The way forward will be decided, know what else is special

Congress: The Congress on Sunday said that its three-day plenary session, starting February 24, will discuss the issue of opposition unity in view of the next Lok Sabha elections and decide the way forward. However, he also emphasized that without his presence, no exercise of opposition unity in the country can be successful. Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh welcomed the statement of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that the top leader of Janata Dal (United) has accepted the impact of Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’.

“Opposition parties should unite and form an alliance”

Nitish Kumar had said on Saturday that the Congress should take advantage of the atmosphere created by the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ and unite the anti-BJP parties to form an alliance and if this happens, the Indian public with more than 300 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party can be reduced to less than 100 seats. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, Ramesh and some other senior leaders of the party put forth some details about the party convention.

Venugopal reacts to Nitish Kumar’s statement

Venugopal said that a decision regarding the election of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will be taken at the party’s steering committee meeting on February 24. In reference to Nitish Kumar’s statement, Venugopal said, ‘We invited like-minded parties during ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. Most of the parties came. During the session of Parliament, took the opposition parties together in the matter of Adani Group. He said, ‘The convention will be a platform where it will be discussed. Surely instructions will come in this regard (leadership).

‘We believe that unity of the opposition is necessary’

Ramesh said, ‘We believe that the unity of the opposition is necessary. But the yatra was not taken out for the unity of the opposition, this could be the result. It will be discussed in the convention. We cannot say what form it will take. He said, ‘We welcome the statement of Nitish Kumar ji because he has accepted that ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ has not only affected the Congress but also Indian politics. This is a transformative moment for Indian politics, he has accepted it.

‘We know our role very well’

Ramesh said, ‘We know our role very well. Congress is the only party which has not compromised with BJP anywhere. Without naming any party, he said, ‘There are many parties who come to the meeting with Mallikarjun Kharge ji, but their actions are seen with the ruling party. We do not have two faces. We want JPC to investigate Adani’s case.

‘We don’t need anyone’s certificate’

The Congress leader insisted, ‘We do not need anyone’s certificate. Any opposition unity without the Congress will fail…Without a strong Congress, a strong opposition unity is impossible. There should be an alliance before the elections, it should happen after, people will present their views on this in the convention. He said that before 2024 there are elections in many states on which the party has to pay attention. Venugopal said that this plenary session this time will prove to be a milestone in the direction of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
