With an aim to make the Punjab Police more effective, prompt and responsive in tackling crime, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday flagged off a fleet of 98 Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) to help those in trouble. Emergency services needed by trapped persons can be provided in a timely manner after receiving a call to the Emergency Response Support System or dial 112.
Talking to reporters after flagging off the ERVs here today, the Chief Minister described it as a historic initiative to help people in any emergency situation. He said that these ERVs equipped with Mobile Data Terminals (MDT) and Global Positioning System (GPS) will reach the spot immediately in case of any criminal incident and they will be deployed in all the 28 police stations of the state. The police will be posted under the police stations of the districts. Bhagwant Mann said ERVs. termed the introduction as a major step towards the modernization of the police for the convenience of the people.
The Chief Minister said that unlike the old system of manually noting down the complaints of the victims and then acting on it within 20-25 minutes, these ERVs. The Chief Minister said that being a border state, the hostile forces of Punjab are making nefarious plans to disturb the peace of the state, but the Punjab Police has always foiled such attempts. He said that in order to overcome the major challenges facing the state, it is necessary to modernize the police force in the field of investigation, science and technology according to modern requirements. The Chief Minister reiterated that Punjab will soon join hands with the multinational company Google to update the police in the state on modern lines. He said that a comprehensive blueprint has been prepared in this regard and a formal agreement will be signed soon. Bhagwant Mann said that this will help increase the efficiency of the Punjab Police to deal with any untoward challenge in the state.
The Chief Minister further said that Rs 41 crore has already been released for updating the communication system of the Punjab Police. He said that the Punjab government has sanctioned Rs 30 crore to further strengthen the cyber cell of the state police. Bhagwant Mann said that this will help the cyber cell to check effectively, which will help maintain law and order in the state.
The Chief Minister further said that for the first time in the history of the state, the plans of the Punjab government to register false cases against innocent people have been foiled. He said in clear words that the rule of law prevails in the state and every action of the government is based on the prescribed laws. Bhagwant Mann said that whoever takes the law into his hands will not be spared, no matter how wealthy he may be.
The Chief Minister further said that the state does not have a single drop of surplus water to share with other states. He said that Punjab is already making strenuous efforts to ensure maximum utilization of canal water in the state and the Sirhind feeder to meet the water requirement of the entire Malwa region has a capacity of only 5200 cusecs of water, while Indira Gandhi Canal has a capacity of 18,000 cusecs of water. Bhagwant Mann said that if Rajasthan needs water, it can only take its due share as Punjab is already finding it difficult to meet the needs of its farmers.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister also inspected the exhibition of state-of-the-art weapons currently being used by the Punjab Police.
