Sandhu founded the Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in London, Mohali in 2001 and a major breakthrough came with the establishment of Chandigarh University in 2012. The university ranked first in the QS World Rankings 2023 among private universities in Asia.

Chandigarh University Chancellor Sandhu, who faced hardships in early life, has provided financial assistance to countless students to get quality education. Along with active involvement in wider community initiatives, he strives to promote health and wellness while promoting communal harmony through his two NGOs, 'Indian Minorities Foundation' and 'New India Development (NID) Foundation'.
